Over the years, I have been writing about misconceptions regarding the schooling process. The purpose of these posts is to explain why I disagree with various comments that I have heard people make about schooling. These are meant as personal thoughts rather than conclusive proof, and I will admit that I'm not always the best at explaining my thoughts. Regardless, I have decided that I should be willing to share these posts when I encounter someone online who makes an argument that I have already discussed.
There are a lot of tech companies that have tried to use technology to improve schools. Most products have been seriously underwhelming. When programs fail, schools find it easy to blame attempts to shift away from the conventional schooling model.
Most Ed tech fits one of two patterns. The most popular tools are typically those designed to help teachers in the conventional schooling model. The others are attempts to digitize the conventional schooling model.
We have a serious educational crisis on our hands. There are definitely ways in which technology can address our problems. Unfortunately, that's not how Ed tech works. Instead, these companies are building tools around a severely flawed model. These tools aren't failing because of their differences. They are failing because of their similarities.
We need to seek out the best approach to education. Instead, we have been seeking out the best way to implement a definitively anti-educational schooling model. This is not just about Ed tech, but Ed tech is clearly contributing to the problem.
