Fun with Excel: College Subsidies III

To finish off this series on college subsidies, I'm essentially circling back to the original numbers. I added a section to show the benefits and harm if all 50 states implemented a program to fully subsidize college. Considering these formed the basis for the calculations, the numbers match. The harm was calculated as twice the benefit.

This latest spreadsheet can be found at: College Subsidies III.xlsx

Going back to the previous spreadsheet, all states individually had a net benefit ranging from 2.32 to 3.04. In a sense, every state could benefit from subsidizing college based on these numbers. In another sense, each state would be harmed. In other words, each state could appear to benefit from such laws, but collectively be harmed. This is because, as I have already stated, the benefits remain in the state while the harms is spread out through the country.

As we have become more globalized, this same concept can be applied to nations. I suspect that the United States is too large to have any legitimate benefits, but smaller countries would almost certainly benefit, especially in comparison to other countries, by subsidizing college. If every nation subsidized college, we would all suffer.
