Addressing automation

Is technology going to make your job obsolete? This has become a serious concern for many people, and it can cause future generations far more trouble than what we are seeing today.

Is there anything that can be done to help with employment while jobs are becoming automated? I was recently thinking about this question, and I came up with an idea. If we cut out one day (for now) out of the work week, more people would need to be hired to do the same amount of work.

I don't want to use automation as an excuse for laziness. If we gave everyone an extra day each week, I would want that day to be used. Ideally, I would like to see everybody with one day off each week to dedicate to educational pursuits.

There is one potentially disastrous problem with this idea. If you tell everyone that they are expected to spend one day each week to furthering education, the schools could become involved. We are already doing way too much to ensure that the schools take responsibility for controlling and restricting the educational process. Any attempts to promote further education should not be used as an excuse for the schools to further their anti-educational agenda.
