What do teachers produce?

I have heard arguments about what teachers produce. Some people insist that they don’t produce anything tangible. Others insist that they produce the workforce. As far as I’m concerned, teachers definitely do produce something. They produce mindless drones.

Teachers have produced our countries corrupt and mentally weak leaders. Barack Obama and George Bush both had significant schooling including time in some prestigious colleges. The republican candidates for the 2012 election that have received so much ridicule also have extensive schooling. Dan Quayle developed a reputation for being unintelligent (although the primary incident that people cite was clearly misrepresented) and it’s the same story with him. It isn’t just America. While nobody seems to know exactly how Osama Bin Laden’s schooling life went, it’s clear that he had spent quite a bit of time in the system.

The schools emphasize the importance of a good job while devaluing human decency. As a result, greed and corruption are common among those who are pushed through the schools. This means that you could argue that teachers produce greed and corruption. Since students are expected to sacrifice ability for opportunity, you could also argue that teachers produce incompetence.

Considering how many people are exposed to the schools, they could be very well be the biggest influence on the modern world. They will likely be even more influential in the future. In fact, teachers frequently argue that they are responsible for producing the future. When that future arrives, I’m sure that they will downplay their role similar to how they downplay the role of past schools in producing the present. Considering how mindless we have become, teachers have clearly produced the most mindless era in history.

Considering the emotional abuse and pressure to conform, there is no question at all that teachers produce mental health problems. Related to this, teachers have produced depression and suicides. They have even played a role in producing school shootings.

I might not restrict myself to what’s tangible, but I feel like teachers produce plenty. Rather than ask what teachers produce, I have a better question. What good do teachers produce?
