Learning Resource Center

Why doesn’t this exist? A place where people can just go and learn. The concept is so simple, yet I am unaware of anyone creating anything like it.

Ideally, the job of the teacher is not to teach. It is to motivate and provide resources. The most neglected students are self-motivated independent learners. Combining these two things, some students really only need access to resources. Expanding resource access beyond school-aged learners would further support those who want to learn throughout their lifetimes.

There are different types of resources. Documentation and access to people who can help you understand material are important. To learn computer skills, you need access to a computer. What if you want to learn science? There are very few places to learn skills without having to pay for your own equipment. What if you want to learn a specific subject with unique tools and specimens? Do you want to have to pay for everything yourself or share the expense with people like you?

Do you want to learn how to cook? You probably already have access to a kitchen, but you are probably limited in what you have purchased. Do you want to learn to slow cook or grill without having to buy new toys? Do you just want to try these things before you commit to the expense? These are things that can be addressed.

How about foreign languages? I’m sure that you can find numerous resources for this subject, but do you want to have to buy every book (which couldn’t teach you proper pronunciation anyway) and every computer program just to find out what works best for you? Perhaps an environment that provides accessible options would be a better way. I would guess that foreign television channels would also prove beneficial, but who would pay for them before they have learned the language?

Learning can be infectious. If somebody is trying something new and asks me a question that I can’t answer, I want to figure out the solution. Their desire to learn makes me want to learn. In any open learning environment such as this, the quality of education will go far beyond what any controlled environment such as schooling can possibly provide.
