I recently posted about why I like to pluralize education. The more I think about it, the more I realize that I need to start embracing a new term, educational diversity.
What is educational diversity? It's the variability of how different people learn. If we are pushing the same approach to education on everyone, educations are not adequately diverse.
Much like mental diversity, educational diversity is an important concept to support. Different people have unique needs, strengths, and passions. In order to accommodate these unique needs, strengths, and passions, we need to be supportive of educational diversity.
Also like mental diversity, conventional schooling is hostile to this concept. They try to teach all students the exact same things in the exact same way at the exact same time. If you dare to look past the shallow checklist definition of diversity, one thing should be very clear. There is nowhere near enough diversity in our schools.
