Misconception #147: Children aren't people

Over the years, I have been writing about misconceptions regarding the schooling process. The purpose of these posts is to explain why I disagree with various comments that I have heard people make about schooling. These are meant as personal thoughts rather than conclusive proof, and I will admit that I'm not always the best at explaining my thoughts. Regardless, I have decided that I should be willing to share these posts when I encounter someone online who makes an argument that I have already discussed.

Years ago, I saw a disturbing quote shared by the WEA. I didn't copy the quote or the location, so I don't remember the exact wording. It was a teacher saying something about liking her career because she likes seeing children become people.

The only way the quote could possibly make sense is if the teacher didn't see children as people when they start school. The fact that the WEA shared the quote shows they are supportive of teachers who don't see children as people. Considering the organization's influence over children, I find that deeply disturbing.

When Joe Biden was campaigning for his presidential run, he inadvertently reminded me of that quote. He said something along the lines of, "I like children better than people." On the surface, this might sound supportive of children. From my perspective, he was telling us that he doesn't see children as people.

Children are humans. Children have minds of their own. Children should clearly be thought of as people. Sure, there are differences between children and adults, but that doesn't mean they should be treated as less than people.

As much as the schools don't want to hear this, children shouldn't be deprived of the rights and freedoms that other people have. They should be allowed to think for themselves and develop as individuals. They should not have government workers molding their minds however they see fit.
