Misconception #127: Government-run schools don't discriminate

Over the years, I have been writing about misconceptions regarding the schooling process. The purpose of these posts is to explain why I disagree with various comments that I have heard people make about schooling. These are meant as personal thoughts rather than conclusive proof, and I will admit that I'm not always the best at explaining my thoughts. Regardless, I have decided that I should be willing to share these posts when I encounter someone online who makes an argument that I have already discussed.

One of the more popular arguments against school choice is that taxpayer money can be sent to schools that discriminate. By contrast, government-run schools supposedly aren't allowed to discriminate. All you have to do for this argument to make sense is to ignore the discrimination that is so common in the government-run schools.

I know that I'm not alone in recognizing discrimination. I have encountered a number of people who mentioned that these schools discriminate on the basis of zip code. Although this is true, there are a couple forms of discrimination that are more substantial.

Agism is embedded deep in the schools. How children are viewed and what they are allowed to do is based primarily on age. Children are even grouped into rigid age-based groupings to further determine what they can do and how they should be treated. Teachers overwhelmingly view themselves as superior to these younger citizens. On the flip side of the issue, adults are effectively prohibited from utilizing services offered by these facilities.

Often overlooked, there is another massive form of discrimination. Teachers are completely intolerant of anyone who doesn't fit their narrow and rigid mold. Individuals are treated horribly. Opportunities such as extracurricular activities are frequently eliminated from these students. Discrimination against individuals has become downright excessive.

If we can't fund choice because the schools chosen can discriminate, what does that say about the government-run model? If we can't fund discrimination, then we have no choice other than to defund government-run schools. Those institutions are highly discriminatory themselves, and funding them means that taxpayers are mandated to fund discrimination.
