Schools keep complaining about not being fully funded. What if we went beyond what they currently think of as fully funding our schools? What if we doubled current spending? What would happen?
I have been saying this for years. Education is nowhere near as expensive as we portray. School funding primarily goes to educational constraints. If we doubled funding to schools most of that money would strengthen these constraints. This would likely lead to an even bigger educational crisis than we have now.
How would teachers respond? They would make up even more excuses for why they need more money. They would redefine what they mean by fully funding schools. They would demand that the failure of increased funding could be solved by throwing even more taxpayer money into the pit.
I'm sure there are people out there who don't like my guess, but there's a slight problem with that. This isn't a guess. It has already happened. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but there is no question that inflation-adjusted spending has more than doubled over the years. Look at what has happened during that time.
Instead of fixing our educational crisis, we have strengthened our crisis. Schools have responded by asking for money. The amount viewed as necessary to fully fund the schools has increased substantially. Our solution to failures associated with increased funding is increased funding.
The bottom line is that funding was never the problem. The problem is the system itself. No amount of money will fix this mess. Instead of throwing even more taxpayer funds into the crisis, we should seek solutions to our crisis. We need an entirely new model.
Education has taken on contradictory meanings. Some of us reject using the term to refer to our schools. It can be stated that our schools are at war with education. This blog was initially developed for the purpose of sharing some quick (rather than conclusive) pro-education/anti-schooling thoughts. This has been expanded to include a voice from the other side of the war. Admittedly, this voice was picked for its tendency to show the absurdities of the pro-schooling/anti-educational side.
