Over the years, I have been writing about misconceptions regarding the schooling process. The purpose of these posts is to explain why I disagree with various comments that I have heard people make about schooling. These are meant as personal thoughts rather than conclusive proof, and I will admit that I'm not always the best at explaining my thoughts. Regardless, I have decided that I should be willing to share these posts when I encounter someone online who makes an argument that I have already discussed.
In recent years, I have encountered the argument that our "public" schools are sacred ground. This has come up multiple times. The problem with this is that this is religious terminology. If this is the case, then we need to defund the schools. Our constitution does not allow for an established state religion.
Actually, this terminology could be used figuratively. Maybe they are not saying schools are religious. Maybe they are saying that schooling to society is like religious sites to religion. That is just as bad. Considering education is a natural process, we should not be elevating government control to that level.
Many teachers openly refer to their job as a "higher calling." This is another obvious religious term. Some people clearly do treat our schools as a religion.
While I'm on the topic, I should probably mention that I would much rather have taxpayer funds going to a religion of the family's choice than a religion of the government's choice. Only one of those two options is constitutional, and it happens to match my views. It's time to stop using the tax code to force low-income families into an established state religion.
