One of the many complaints I have heard people aim at the government-controlled model of schooling is that schools are training children to become activists for liberal causes. The NEA and AFT have been attacking these complaints on the grounds that they undermine the work of the teaching profession. Do I believe this complaint? After reading an article posted by the NEA, I am definitely in agreement.
In the article I read, the NEA asked teachers what it means when they claim that so-called public education is the cornerstone of democracy. The very first teacher insisted that activism is an important part of democracy, so she created a capstone project. This capstone project required students to practice activism for a cause they select from a list. If you don't believe me, I will provide a link to the article below:

Activism doesn't necessarily mean liberal activism. What kind of list did the teacher provide? As it turns out, the list was produced by an organization called Human Rights Watch. A quick search will show you that this organization is skewed towards a liberal perspective.
Actually, you don't need to search. The NEA was kind enough to provide a link to the list of rights they were discussing. The list consisted exclusively of liberal causes. For example, they discussed abortions but not forced vaccinations. There was also no mention of how Democrats are using flawed arbitrary definitions of hate speech and misinformation as a way to attack freedom of speech.
The items on their list also pushed an intentionally skewed narrative. Democracy was on their list. They mentioned concerns over conservatives pushing for voter ID laws. There was no mention of attempts the Democrats have made to completely remove opposition from ballots.
You don't have to take my word on any of this. Click on the link from the NEA's article. It is very clear that this is an intentionally skewed source. An argument could even be made that it qualifies as propaganda.
For years, conservatives have accused schools of training students to become activists for liberal causes. What does the NEA do? They post an example on their website of a teacher assigning students to engage in activism for liberal causes.
This fits very well with something that I keep saying. The best arguments against our schools aren't coming from their critics. They are actually coming from the NEA and AFT. If you want to know why some of us hate the NEA and AFT, all you have to do is listen to them.
